Who created this controversy?
Recently, some internet propagandists launched a cowardly campaign against Lays Pakistan - manufacturers of delicious Lays chips in Pakistan.
Emails were mass-circulated to a large number of people informing them that Lays chips contains pig fat which is HARAM in Islam.
Emails were sent to thousands or possibly millions of people - a proof that this was a work of a habitual spammer wanting to create confusion among people and causing financial loss to the company he is targeting.
Hidden behind the safety of the internet, the identity of the culprits remains unknown. Most probably it is a bunch of mullahs who haven't yet found any better use of the internet.
Should we care if it's halal or haram?
In a country where most of the people drink water that is as dirty as sewerage water, eat food that is mostly infested with chemicals or pesticides that won't go away no matter how much you cook it, where packed milk contains chemicals such as urea and bleaching powder, does it really matter to us that a product that is less commonly used allegedly contains some traces of a HARAM item?If we go by the spirit of Islam, HARAM is a terminology used for anything that is not liked by god, but it has been left upon muslims to decide if they want to go for it or not. Eating HARAM is not a sin, it does not make you a non-muslim!
There is a brighter side to this controversy though, Lays has increased the quantity of their chips in each pack size without increasing the price - so grab your favorite flavor and enjoy!
