He was first injured by beatings from the militia and then shot dead.  His dead body was also mistreated afterwards.

How it all happened?

The latest version of story is:

• Gadhafi was fleeing Sirte in his convoy when it was struck by NATO warplanes.
• Gadhafi and his surviving supporters took refuge in the nearby drainpipes.
• Rebel fighters spotted them and dragged injured Gadhafi out.
• There was a firefight between his supporters and rebel fighters.
• A few bullets hit Gadhafi which killed him, his supporters were also killed as a result.
• One of his sons also died in the same firefight.
• One of his supporters was his loyal army chief who was left all alone without the army he once commanded.

The name Gadhafi is spelt with different spellings: Gaddafi, Qazzafi, Gadhafi etc.
